What is a Hashtag?

  • The # symbol is called a hashtag.
  • It is primarily used to mark keywords or topics in messages (tweets) when using Twitter. This is the original use of the symbol but do read on.

Why do you need to know about this?

  • It was created by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.
  • It is a way to organize and quickly search messages.
  • Hashtags helps you find interesting Tweets
  • To use the hashtag you would place it just in front of the keyword or subject that you would want to search on later. So for example, if you were sending a message (aka tweeting) about Facebook, you might use #Facebook to find news and/other followers about Facebook. The hashtag can be placed anywhere in the Tweet.  Remember, if you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.
  •  Hashtagged words that become very popular are often termed trending topics ie it is away of knowing what the “hottest buzz” is in the “media” within that timeline.

Social Media A to Z : G is for Google

  • Google’s mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”  
  • With that mission, it is technically an internet search company but somehow that descriptor doesn’t give it justice as it is so much more.  
  • Google has developed many web applications that have significantly impacted the way we interact. 
Interesting Facts About Google

 

  1. Backrub was Google’s original name when it started as a research project of the then graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
  2.  LEGO was used for Google’s first storage unit. They used LEGO bricks as they made it easy to expand the unit  when needed for their hard drive. That’s right! Now that is innovative and fun!
  3. Backrub was incorporated as Google: the name was derived from the mathematical figure googol which represents the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.
  4. The 20-year commitment was made between Eric Schmidt (CEO), Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Google Guys). They made the commitment to work together at Google for 20-years.
  5. The first Google Doodle was posted on their webpage. The first post was to advise users that they were out of the office at an event. It was well received and now Google Doodles has been used since to recognize key events.
  6. In 2000,1 Billion pages indexed making Google the largest search engine in the world.
  7.  Adword was introduced – a step into Google’s advertising program.
  8. Gmail was launched IN 2004
  9. Google went public-opening stock was $85.00 per share (September 4, 2004).
  10. Google maps and Google Earth were launched IN 2005
  11. YouTube was acquired IN 2006. YouTube is the  current leader in the video-sharing.
  12. Google was entered in the English dictionary as a verb. We no-longer search, we google for
     information.
  13. Chrome web browser was launched.
  14. In 2009 Google sent its first tweet in binary code:
  15. Google was listed as the world’s top brand for the 4th consecutive year in 2010
  16. Google currently holds 90.90% of the global market share for internet search.
  17. Google currently holds 45% smartphone marketshare

Some to of the reasons why people use Facebook:

  1. To find  and interact with friends and family members.
  2.  To share experiences (personal, new purchase, movies and more).
  3. To gather feedback on an items.
  4. To increase exposure on a hobby or expertise.
  5. To join or develop focus groups-it is a place where people speak freely.
  6. To  share a personal-side with customers
  7. To increase endorsements and in turn the sharing of these endorsement throughout the community.
  8. To find deals and discounts from Facebook pages.
  9. To link website or blogs to a vibrate community with the hope it will drive some of that community back to the website
  10. To write a Facebook blog.
